I really think that if you are going to use a computer for a specific

applications that you do not use or need. That way, you do not
introduce conflicts or load the computer with TSR's that saps
reosurces. You do not need to have anti virus, and many more
unnecessary applications (such as anti spyware, firewall etc.), if
you are only just going to use the computer to run CNC software.
WinXP is loaded with many "hidden" appications that operate in the
background and so it slows down the computer... It is not a bad
operating system, but you can always remove all the unnecessary
registry keys (not for the fainthearted) by backinbg up your registry
first and deleting the items that you do not need. In fact, a 1.7 GHZ
computer should run very fast if it is not bogged down by so many
applications. I have a few computers and use W2K as my main workhorse.
I only use WinXP for certain applications. I started with DOS 3 many
years ago on a 086XT and have experienced all the Windows OS, working
as a Computer Technician on both hardware and software.
