Nice post - and yes, in some applications the smaller motors will
indeed outperform the larger ones. I went through a practical
exercise that demonstrated this when I re-converted my Taig CNC mill
- the original Taig hardware drove 200 oz-in motors rated at 1A/phase
- nameplate voltage around 9V IIRC. I ended up with improved
performance using 140 oz-in motors. I wrote up the conversion in two
parts (first part - mechanical enhancements, second was about motors
and drivers) here:
