This is exactly what I'm talking about...

Here is the applicable excerpt from the Stepper Motor Basics "white
paper" currently posted at the geckodrives.com site which shows what
Mariss ACTUALLY said/wrote:

Now, first we need to remember that he is talking about HIS drives...

Then we need to see that he did NOT say "use the max volts you can
up to 25x motor nameplate rating"...

The "general concensus" you mention has apparently deviated quite a
bit from what the mfr. actually suggests...

What likely has happened is that Mariss was asked a SPECIFC
application question onlist soemwhere; and THAT answer has "become"
the "concensual" replacement for this white paper text.

And it MAY be absolutely TRUE for certain CNC apps that the 20X IS
the correct number to use. The danger is in not knowing that this
number may NOT apply to YOUR mechanics, drives, motors, and/or
software...
