How are they lacking for a power feed unit? A DC motor will
precisely repeat the same speed in both directions. A stepper motor
is overly complicated for a power feed unit.

A variable speed drill motor with a locking trigger could be a good
solution for this size lathe, depending on the lead screw and low
speed torque on the drill motor.
