You can do a ramp with the 555. You need a relatively large resistor
and capacitor to do it (since the time constant needs to be around the
ramp time you want, likely in seconds.)
I don't know the specific circuit to do this off the top of my head, but
it's possible and shouldn't take too many extra parts.
If you need some AVR code, let me know which chip you may use. The code
is pretty straightforward, especially for chips with the advanced PWM
generator (mostly the megas, but maybe some tinys as well).
