You might look at renting a small space at an industrial park. Maybe go in
with a few people and share a large shop space.

I was at a technology auction South of Seattle a few months ago and there
were lots of 'For Rent' signs up. With this economy, the landlord might be
willing to cut a good deal if you mention that you will be there at odd
hours and keep an eye on the other places...
