Another robust alternative to a simple mouse would be a small graphics
tablet. I have one made by Wacom called the 'Graphire' which is a bit
smaller than a normal mouse mat and uses either a two-button and wheel mouse
or a pen. The only wire connection is from the computer to the tablet and
the mouse or pen are entirely separate with no ball, optical windows etc. to
get dirty. This one cost about 70 UKP.
