I know nothing about your hardware or software but one of the best ways to enjoy pain-free programming is to hire help. I hired a consultant at $75 an hour for one day's work on a project needing both hardware and software help and he delivered a solution to spec. I later learned my specification was off so I found out what to do right by interacting on a forum like this one plus browsing manufacturer's data sheet, and talked to an interested party and hired him for the next piece of hardware and software. That can save lots of painfully wasted time.
The best place to find help on your specific hardware should be a forum related to your electronic parts, or software operating system, say the microprocessor or your board or someone might be available here. I also recently found a husband wife team who gave me a good deal on designing a printed circuit board for me and showing me how to have it made in China. That forum was the old MaxNC forum.
Even if you're on food stamps like I was, it's worth it to spend a little for help when you need it, which will go much further than the helpful forum comments you can get to help you along the way.
