I'm new to this forum, but without even seaching the archives I know enough not to ask which is better, Mach3 or LinuxCNC. I only referred to that program as a generic name for higher level control software. I haven't research this myself enough to know which I might prefer. Having said that, if someone could tell me that what I wanted to do was a lot easier in one of these programs than the other, that would be very useful information (and it wouldn't necessarily imply that one program was "better" overall, only that it would be preferred for this one specialized application).

Most of my work with my lathe and milling machine is related to my interest in restoring old motorcycles. Much of this type of work actually is better performed manually. For example, when turning a brake drum I don't know ahead of time how much will need to be removed. I could spend time accurately measuring how oval a drum is, then program that in, then have the lathe cut it. Or, just cut it manually.

Of course, if I already owned CNC machines, I could use them manually when manual was faster, or turn on the CNC when that was better. But, I don't. However, for the purpose that prompted this thread, CNC is clearly the way to go.
