Yes, a DRO is handy. I installed one on my mill/lathe just before I went to CNC.

CNC has the advantage of allowing you to look at the work, and be ready to stop it if something looks off.

A DRO eliminates the issue of having to read dials carefully, and remember how many turns you've made when making a long cut. A DRO might improve a lathe somewhat (although analog gauges do as well), but it transforms a mill.

It's a long story that probably isn't of sufficient interest to merit typing, but although you are correct that two axes would need to be controlled to do this correctly, one will do it with more than sufficient precision on the taper. The larger problem that will limit me is flexing of the shaft I will be cutting (which is only 0.1" in dia.).
