I am in the process of building a MendelMax reprap printer, if you
self-source the parts, you can build one for under $1000 and they are very
good printers. The beauty of reprap is that the idea is that if you can
cobble together a halfway decent printer for little to nothing (called a
repstrap), you can then use that printer to print upgraded parts to make
the machine better, and on and on and on... it just keeps going. Check out
thingiverse.com to check out all of the add-on accessories and other parts
to print for upgrading your machine.
