I have one of these:

http://shop.seemecnc.com/H-1-Complete-Kit-for-Parallel-Port-Mach3-EMC2-71599.htm

and other than the name it's a good machine. There's no need for the Ramps hardware
and as many of you here probably already have Mach3 licenses and a PC there's no
additional cost for the electronics. They also have a RAMPS version available here:

http://shop.seemecnc.com/NEW-H-1-Complete-Kit-RAMPS-14-58796.htm

Some people are using LinuxCNC but not very many.

A bit cheaper than the Huxley but I have no experience with any other printer so
I'm not sure how they compare. There's currently have a Kickstarter campaign for
rev 1 of the machine. One difference between the H1 and other printers is that
all(?) of the plastic parts are injection molded instead of printed. I think this
allows them to sell cheaper because of economics of scale but there's more up
front cost.

Kits may not be as complete as others. For one thing you need to supply your own
connection wire. No big deal though.

There's a forum at forum.seemecnc.com. The company is pretty active and supportive.

Kit prices are good but the cost of replacement/upgrade parts and shipping are pretty
steep.

It can and has been done, but not commonly...the big knock against it is that is very slow compared to a belt driven approach...mills = lots of force and lead screws, 3D printers, less force required and typically belt drive/steppers. Also, there are *many* ways to make/buy an extruder (again, check out the reprap stuff). If you really are interested, I would recommend googling "nophead"...he is a premier 3D hobbyist and has written a world class blog on the evolution of his machines...tons of great information.
