Yes, red,black,white,green is ok, buy only for flexible cords. In
building wiring white must always be the neutral. (Well, there are
exceptions to that, too, but let's go into that.)

SO is just the usual designation for heavy duty flexible cord. There's
also S, SOW, etc. It's the big black rubber jacketed stuff that is used
for industrial cords. There's also SJ, SJT, SJO, etc. That's the lighter
duty flavor. These letter codes are printed on the cord stock. If you go
into an electrical supply and ask for "12-4 SO cord" you'll get 12 gauge
4 conductor heavy duty flexible cord.
