Smoke,

Yes, this was considered. But as Jon A pointed out, if you have
ballscrews installed(typical 5tpi) you might break an arm, or a tool,
trying to "cut" as if you still had the acme's!!

Another point which "snuck by" uncommented is that often machine
tools use left hand threads on leadscrews so that the handle cranks
the "right" way. Since motors don't care, and most ballscrews are
purchased right hand thread, a "retrofit" machine may
have "unnatural" handwheel rotation. There's a GOTCHA waiting to
happen...

P.S. Since I "built" the machine, I'm in a good position to "fix" the
jog problem, and continue. Unless it's REALLY simple, I'm going to
need the Computer control anyway. (since I interpolate
holes/threads/etc.; it is very likely I WON'T HAVE the tooling
available to "pull off" many jobs without the control!) There are
some days the part that HAS to go out, doesn't. Or it goes out from
me (after I pick it up at somebody else's shop :-) )
