Guess I might as well jump in here and get wet.

I have a gear head motor on my knee: Cincinatti contourmaster w/o the tracer stuff. Have a linear encoder on the knee but no servo
pkg to it yet.
I plan to use it in a rather static mode....effectively to cut contour lines, i.e. set Z then move in x and y. move Z ...etc.
Will let everyone know when I finally get controls on the mill.

I strongly considered using a rod off the quill. That is....bolt a rod to the extension off the quill and use a bearing at the top
of the rod to keep it running absolutely vertical. Drive a horizontal arm off of this with the ballscrew. This allows one to get the
driving force as close as possible to the center of the quill; something I think will minimized the torqueing of the quill.

If the Z approach fails then I will be back to trying the quill mode and see what happens.

Right now this is all ideas and no proof. Sorry.
