This is the "joint" which allows the mill spindle(the head) to TILT
toward you or away from you. The "knuckles" of the joint are on the
end of the "ram" which is another part(sliding joint) that allows the
WHOLE head assembly to move towards you or away from you.

What Jon is saying here is that the "heavy" cutting loads caused the
machine to go out of alignment.
