I wonder if it would help to separate two ballnuts some distance apart
on the screw and use a little beefier screw? This would tend to guide
the "quill screw" up and down without rocking. The two ballnuts could
be used for antibacklash. The screw would have to be that much longer
though. But maybe as much loosness comes from mountings to the head?

Ah, design is easy in my head, I can gloss over all those pesky
details. :-)
