This was first postulated by, I believe, Arthur C Clarke, whom I also
believe first postulated man-made satellites themselves.
It's absolutely serious. Materials do no exist today in mass-producable
form that would work but that's never stopped research before.
Using superconducting cables, it would require electrical power most of
the way out but would regenerate it on the return trip. Better yet would
be a tandem setup with elevator cabins running opposite directions.
Combine this with for real mining and refining of asteroids, and we're
gonna bust outa this neighborhood...
