Peter,
Generally, Swiss-type's have their stock centerless ground. Or, they
live with the looseness in the bushing. You can run with loose
stock, you just lose potential precision in the parts.
A few years ago I was talking with the manager of a fairly large
manufacturing company. He authorized purchase of a $200K Swiss CNC
with all the bells and whistles. OOPS...no one told them that they'd
need ground stock. Their next purchase was a centerless grinder...
