Hi,

I have used a set-up like a swiss auto to screwcut the leadscrews for my
little miller. In my case I bolted a plate to the side of the saddle and
fitted it with a hardened bush to just take the stock material. It was
adjusted for position right up against the chuck and gave very smooth
cutting of 14" x 10mm screws.
One of the ideas I have on the list to try is the making of an adjustable
travelling steady based on a camera iris. I figure that if I make a plate
with three blades pivotted like in a camera iris with a closing ring working
on pins part way down these blades, I could make an adjustable steady which
would do the same job as a bush without the need to make new bits for each
size of work. Now, if the 'closing ring' were to be spring loaded with a
strong spring and the tips of the blades were to have a small ball race on
them it might perhaps work on tapered turning??
