Hello Jon,
This is one way to approach. But in addition I would suggest to mount
for each cam a lever and on its end the ball screw nut lets say minimum
5 to one rated. First You can go with very small motors.
Second you increase precision. These machines work damn close as none others Y know.
And possibly you want to keep the precision
The software will be a little difficult to get because all screws will have to
work synchronized.
If You go with steppers they will have to work with encoder or will have to be
homed frequently.
