Actually SOME of the B'port Tru-Trace machines do have lead screws.
A friend bought a practically new (out of storage) machine with two
heads and 3D tracer assembly. That one had hydraulic motors driving
ball screws.

Since the machine was essentially unused we wanted to check the
accuracy of the screws. As near as we could determine there was
about .001" backlash. Not CNC accuracy, but good enough to convert
to a nice manual machine.

These type with ball screws may be worth following up on since they
might be the next best thing to a BOSS for retrofitting.
