usually break turning inserts if I try to take too deep a cut and the
flat belt rides off the cone pulley on my lathe - when I go to retract
the tool from where it has jammed the work, it will be break. But
that tends to be the only way I break them frequently in use, plus the
few that get dropped or damaged in handling. My crosslide has about
.034" of backlash play too (although that should drop below .001" or
so when I finish installing the double-nut ballscrew assembly.)
If I were to use HSS steel for everything I would be forever
sharpening - so I use carbide for steel and cast iron and hss for
aluminum and brass.
