As I am a couple of days late reading this I figured someone would
post this already. But I see there have been several responses with
out a real answer so I will give the information and suspect I will
see 20 more answers as soon as I move on down the list but here
goes anyway.
The Arthur R Warner Co sells all kinds of HSS inserts as well as
special HSS tool bits. The phone number is 724-539-9229 fax 724-
539-3502. E-mail at arwarnerco@.... Web page at
http://www.arwarnerco.com
I talked to a 2nd generation man at the Cabin Fever show this year.
They were selling the insert kits as well as a pile of "mistakes" I
bought some of the mistakes for a buck a pop to play with and also
an insert threading bit.
I talked to the young man for quite a while and found they buy the
HSS soft and use standard machining methods to generate all the
shapes they use then send it out of house for heat treat to harden
it. This was new info to me as a newbe as I always supposed you
ground all the profiles.
As to some of the statements as to why it seems as if there are
some(or maybe many) applications where HSS works better and
you get the same advantages with HSS inserts you do with
carbide. Get dull? index it. If using HSS and CNC the need exists
for repeatable shapes and sizes with inserts you get this. The
inserts are cheap enough you don't resharpen you just toss in
production enviroments. For a newbe all you have to do is rehone
not regenerate the whole form. There seems to be several
advantages in the right application. They have full size threading
bits for about the price of a high quality blank. I feel as if I am
rambling but maybe some of you can see the potential for some
users. It is a family owned business in Latrobe, Pa.
I would suggest taking a few minutes to talk to the guys if you are
ever at show where they have a booth. They were near Scott Logan
at Cabin Fever, across the Aisle from the "Frog" cnc for Sherlines
and Taigs.
