Many years ago when appliances were rated at 110 volts we had 220 volts, then
they stepped up the appliance voltages to 117 volts, now many appliances are
rated at 120 volts and now we have 240 volts. it appears that as people used
more power the power companies stepped up the voltages, cheaper than putting
larger conductors.
