Hi Stan,
How about using a flexible drive outer sleeve - i.e. a tightly coiled spring
tube. You would have to partially enclose it in a semicircular 'guard' so
that it didn't bulge away from the table and the spring would have to be
strong enough to resist opening up when the cylinder retracts but the
principle should work OK.
