Which is kinda nother question I have.

When people design these CNC systems, do they have build a "single"
controller that controlls all CNC components -- and is the only
thing that talks to the EMC?

Or do you build your CNC components, each with a connection to the
EMC and controlled independently? Like a little PIC uC on each
device?

In the case of the former, a single IEEE 1284 port will do nicely
(and most PCs/noteobooks still come with a single parallel port,
although I'm not sure how much longer).

In the case of the latter, multiple RS-232 ports would probably work
best and be the most cost effective.

Again, newbie ignorance in effect.
