PCI slots aren't slated to go away for over 10+ years from now unless they
changed their minds from when I left the PC industry 4 years ago. It was
considered a 15 year bus then. It's also proven, and lots of folks have
billions of dollars tied up in PCI. I see
no indication PCI isn't here to stay for a long while yet.

I think you'll start to see 64 bit PCI slots come into the mainstream way
before you see PCI phase out. We'll see the clock speeds creep up to much
higher than 75mhz as it is now.

AGP is basically a PCI bus clocked 4x faster. So it's proven it can work.

So the bus structure is sound and is expandable to handle a lot more
processor than we've got available now or in the near future.

That's not to say there won't be low end computers with no slots. Built in
video and USB / Firewire for your only I/O. But that won't be the
mainstream. Just the guys out there that write code for a living for
Windows won't stand for that. Neither will the game industry. So that market
alone is enough to justify expandable computers with plenty of slots. All
in one type computers are better suited for the economy end of the scale.
Sometimes a chip that you build into the motherboard to provide some built
in function is cheaper than a PCI slot connector! So there it makes sense to
drop on the chip.

Larry E.
