Er, sort of. It is 4x a "normal" 32-bit, 33MHz PCI. A 64-bit,
66MHz PCI slot is just as fast as 32-bit AGPx2 -- although AGP has
some "niche" features that PCI doesn't.

Basically, AGP was an attempt by Intel to give video its own
dedicated bus and memory access using its lower-costing SMP design,
instead of having to build a _real_ point-to-point bus interconnect
like those used by Alpha, MIPS and SPARC. Hence why x86 doesn't
scale well beyond 4 processors.

AMD's Athlon uses the Alpha EV7 (Alpha 264) interconnect, which
allows upto 16 nodes on an interconnect. This is how a dual-Athlon
system can give I/O higher response times and throughput than
dual-Intel systems, even though it still only uses a single memory
bus -- because one CPU can be doing I/O while another is handling
memory transfers.
