I sure like pretty graphics, but wouldn't take the time to code for it
myself. Many controls these days offer graphical plotting, and there's a
low cost CNC editor that has a graphical preview module (for the
registered version)

Which is what any G-code compatible control program does.
Sticking with G-code is a personal choice, and it's my choice.
Programs I wrote for my MaxNC will run on a Fadal with minor tweaking.
Since I'm commercial and aspire to a machining center or two, I'm
interested in sticking with stuff that is forward compatible. Were I
strictly hobby oriented, I'd personally be interested in learning and
developing something in Forth.

Looks pretty much like a machine control panel rendered on screen, more
or less what I prefer to deal with when interfacing with the machine
itself.
