Peter: Wow. A "topic"! IF you have the (VERY-expensive!) proper
crimping-tool for a given pin/socket for a DB-25 type connector, and are
crimping onto the INTENDED size wire for that terminal-piece, then a crimp
can be VERY secure and "gas-tight", meaning NO corrosion, etc. Most would
argue, "Just as good as a metallurgical bond, as is a properly-done
solder-joint!"

However, you will need ANOTHER crimp-tool for the considerably-larger
motor-terminals/wire, etc.

Carefully "forming" the "sides of the U" with needle-nose pliers over the
wire-end and insulation-end!, then neatly soldering so that no "blob" is left
hanging on the joint, you can "fake it", and the result will be electrically
just as good, and as secure, if you "have done that sort of thing a million
years like us old flatulents". AMP Inc. (is it Harrisburg, PA?) is the
"granddaddy" of crimping, and they WROTE THE BOOK on the topic, and their
stuff is TOPS. But just about EVERY terminal-style and different gage-pair
(one tool may work for #26 thru #24, another for #23-#22, etc.) requires a
DIFFERENT crimp-tool, and those are made like fine automatic-weapon
mechanisms, and cost around $200 each, or more, depending on size, etc. So,
for us po' ol' boys with soldering-skill, just do it WELL, and all will be
fine!
