It depends. If you are using encoders to check position of the steppers,
or if you are using limit switches at very low current, then you may need
shielding of the stepper cables. Some stepper drivers may be sensitive
to conducted EMI coming IN on the stepper motor cables, and may
need shielding to keep external EMI sources from causing false
operation. Plasma cutter and arc welding systems are the most
likely candidates for such shielding needs, but some routers especially
with variable speed motors may also cause problems with the stepper
drivers.
