Peter: The steppers themselves, and their driver-outputs, do NOT need
shielding. However, many professional installations of steppers have
shielding around the four or six wires between the drivers and the motor,
often grounded ONLY one one end, to reduce the EMI to OTHER logic-circuitry
caused by the rather-substantial EMI caused by the high-current "square-wave"
switching of the motor-current. Opto-isolator inputs to the stepper-driver
circuitry can eliminate MUCH of the EMI effects you might otherwise realize
with only "TTL wiring" from PCB to PCB (or computer printer-port to
motor-driver circuit-boards, etc.).
