You are buying cable in the wrong place. If you can put the connector ends on
the cable, check out what Meci has for sale:

You can buy ordinary 6 wire, 18 gauge (18-6) shielded cable for 14 cents per
foot, 100 foot minimum. 20 gauge, 4 conductor is 7 cents per foot. No 4
conductor 18 gauge this week. These are under "Wire" "Multiconductor
Stranded".

You can also buy Belden Infinity cable (intended for motion applications such
as this). Most of what they have is unshielded; I just bought some of the 20
gauge, 12 conductor (that I connected to make 4 conductor) for 50 cents per
foot. See "Wire" "Industrial Control Wire" bottom of the second page (p/n
631-0014).

Even better, order by noon Monday and you get 15% off.

I agree with Jan, don't disassemble your steppers-hook up to them outside the
motor by splicing to the wire (preferrably with a connector so you can take
it apart later).
