Hi Peter,
I HATE to cut motor wires! I splice them at the ends, staggered a
little so there is no big lump. I am not shielding the motor wires, but
if you need it, then you might consider using a slip-over braid. It can
be slipped down after the splice is made, and the cable's shield can be
extended. I have a roll of 1/2" shielded braid, which works well
(bought it surplus for antenna ground radials).
I also like to use 3/8" Flex Guard, which comes in 10' packs. A "split
convoluted wire loom that can be slipped over wiring to protect and give
a professional look".

I DO plan to shield encoder wire runs. And who knows, I may want to
slip a shield over bigger stepper and servo motor's wires.
TTL is "Transistor Transistor Logic", one of the early logic families.
Currently S, LS, HT and variations of the line are common.
