the draw for me is MOSTLY a linux angle. Many years ago i tried to learn
'computer art' after buying a new computer with windows pre-installed and
installing some 'art' programs, i proceeded to scan in MOST of my work. the
editing process gave me blue screen after blue screen. so i built a better
computer and installed windows myself... even though the hardware was more
then enough, same thing happened. i tried linux, it was hard to learn, but
i endured, remembering how windows had corrupted the hard drive and caused
me to lose a month of work (shame on me for not backingn up) now with the
GIMP and QCAD, i can create just about anything i want without fear, no more
lock ups, no more crashes (except with beta releases... which i dont do
'art' with.
now, the thought of a pattentually harzardous machine attached to a windows
computer gives me nightmares (someone on this list allready suggested
therapy)
another big draw for me is that the information is all redily available,
even if cryptic, it's all there, from the OS down to the minute details, all
i have to do is learn. No more having to endure a bug (oops... sorry i
meant 'feature')
the free $ part doens't really matter to me, but the freeness of not having
to deal with microsoft is priceless to me.---Dave L.

Other than being free, what is it that draws so many folks on this list to
use EMC? I would have thought that, with so many G-Code interpreters being
available for DOS and even for Windows, that the necessity to change
operating systems (and to learn a new OS) and then learn to "tune" and use
EMC would be more effort than many would want to expend with so many
alternatives.
Please don't take this question as either a flame or insinuation that EMC
and Linux are somehow "bad". I'm just interested in understanding why this
particular G-Code interpreter is so appealing.
