The tapping thread may have started marginally off topic, in that it
was originally about hand tapping, but it quickly moved to a very
topical discussion of the various ways that tapping can be done in
a cnc machine.

We saw surveys of the different approaches, both mechanical and computerized.
Options like rigid tapping, and live tooling were mentioned. A few
years ago, either of these would have been out of question for a home-shop
CNC machine, but because the home shop crowd took time to learn about them,
they are starting to show up now.

Rigid feed-per-revolution tapping is one of the hot topics of the
moment in terms of the further development of the control packages we
use such as EMC, and has been discussed extensively on this list
since it fits in exactly with the charter.

And with mariss making servo drives that can run a moderate spindle
motor so inexpensively now, live tooling is something many of us
should consider.

I'm sorry to say, that when you declared this topic off topic, I can
only assume that you were not taking time to actually follow it enough
to understand where it was going.
