Until they break.....sorry, couldn't resist. When running production
(taaping numerous holes all day long), it was a guessing game. We
would take note of the number of holes before it broke and then
change it out say 2-3 holes shy of that.

In the real world, keep an eye on your tap, look for sharp points
that are not chipped or broke. If you are hand tapping, look for a
smoothe feeling cut. If you feel a lot of slip sticking and binding
then its time to change it.
