That adapter works as follows:

The dovetail mounts on the horizontal vertical column dovetails.
The right angle part fits on the spindle.
This provides support for both ends of the horizontal shaft.
If you bolted the right angle drive to your existing horizontal shaft, you
MIGHT get it to work (what that would entail I'd have no idea) but you'd
most likely have a very weak assembly that would flex excessively under
load.
