I think it ties into having a "graduated" knob, so that one could just
"count the clicks". I don't know (yet), I've not had enough experience
with this.

"RADIO" people, and "Analog" engineers like knobs that they can "spin",
and have a "weighted feel". I had a V.P. of engineering spend
considerable time having me try different encoders, and weighted dials
with "finger spin" depressions in the faces for a microwave sweeper. I
have a couple of the encoder samples, and I've just remembered that I
should have one of the knobs, too. That's what is missing from the
Sherline knob on an encoder, some weight, IMO.

But then I'm a radio guy, what do I know? does this apply to mills and
lathes?
