I am not too certain that using a mouse would work very
well. I just counted the number of serrations that you
get on a mouse and it is 36; based on previous
conversations on this group, that cannot be increased.
What we really want, however, is a something that
divides 100 cleanly..... If we were to use a 1.8 degree
motor to give us the "tactile" feel, that would give us
200 "clicks" per revolution, which we could engrave on
the dial. When turning the dial quickly, we could
programatically set the travel on the machine to go
1.000, 0.100 or 0.010 (three illuminated buttons);
likewise, if you moved one 'click' to 'edge' the table
over, you'd move 0.0005. If we had a hypothetical 400
resolution encoder attached to this setup that was
perfectly aligned with the motor 'clicks', you would get
2 phase changes per click... very easy to deal with.
Similar logic cold work for an 800 line, 200 line or
even 50 line setup (the latter probably using
pulley/gear multiplication). Anyhow, a 36 line one
doesn't seem to work very well here. We want to have
each 'click' move the same amount.
Or.... I am missing something! Sure, I guess you could
multiply it up pretty far, but it still seems like a
less than ideal setup. Too bad... I liked the idea too.

Hand wheel with clicks, and a rubber band drive from the
hand wheel shaft to
the encoder spindle to gear it up in a suitable
ratio.....
