Why bother with graduated knobs?

The knob on the HASS machine at school is not graduated (but it does have
detents) & no one ever looks at the knob while making adjustments anyway.
Everyone looks at the tool location relative to the work while using the
knob. Nobody counts clicks either, the machine does that for us. The
spindle is moved close to the desired location using the .01 setting. The
spindle moves just fast enough at that setting to NOT be dangerous. A finer
setting is chosen for final setup. BTW...this machine has graduations of
.01, .001 & .0001. All X Y & Z dimensions from home zero show up on screen
thruout the set up procedure.
