George,
Well I planned to have it run all the time, for two reasons...

1) As this is a modified soldering iron (40W) and the rather large
copper bit has been removed the element needs a way to dissipate the
heat, and
without the pump running all the time, it helps "cool" it.

2) As you pointed out temperature control will be easier with a constant
air flow.

Of course there will be a constant stream of very hot air, so I'll have
to rig up a stand for it. That's no more dangerous than the other two
irons I have on.
