You make a good point.
Here's a description of my Hakko motor driven solder sucker. It has a
solder catcher (ball of steel wool) followed by a 1/4" thick
replaceable felt filter in a pyrex glass tube. Then at the input of the
pump the is another 1/4" thick felt filter. The output of the pump
itself is inside of the box that houses the pump, may be a last ditch
attempt to catch anything that got that far...
I replace the steel wool filter almost every session, and first felt
filter when it's obvious that it's clogged. The filter at the pump only
needs replacing once every few months, depends on how much I use it. The
second filter normally clogs with a light brown stuff, which I assume if
the burnt flux. The first felt filter clogs with a grey material (lead)
at the front end and has the light brown discoloration at the back
end...
