DMC basic (Galil) only allows the TAN function to be used in vector mode,
wherein no discontinuities (sharp corners) are allowed. The tangent axis is
electronically geared to the relationship of two other axis' in the vector
sequence.
Dave: To your point about the TAN function being undefined at 90 and 270
degrees, the condition statements required should be similar in solution to
those now used for G02/03. The problem is tractable.
In G-code dialect, you could define the tangential function as a modal call
like G41/42. Turn it on at the beginning of a sequence - turn it off at the
end.
As with finite difference models, you have a choice of forward difference,
back difference or some form of smoothing function to determine the optimal
trajectory. In any case the interpreter needs an entry vector before the
knife is engaged to establish orientation. Simple stuff.
