Hi Hoyt;
My standard recommended modem for darn near all uses is the the US
Robotics Sportster 56K external. Not as solid as commercial rack
modems, but I've got around 20 of them is assorted locations around the
country, never had one fail. Most have been is use for 3+ years. There
are USR WinModems, just keep an eye on the box and look for stickers
that say "Windows required, WinModem, Windows Modem" etc. and walk away
from them. I've also used Zoom external 56 K Dual Mode modems without
problem. The Zoom modems used to come with a specific label that said
something about works with everything, maybe even had the little Tux
sticker on the box.
The modem market is collapsing with so many folks having broadband, and
business doing darn near everything over IP including secure stuff via
VPN, so stores are carrying fewer brands. The last batch of USRs we
ordered came from PC Warehouse I think.
