Hi:
I recently had a similar problem and it had a strange solution.
The wire from my computer to the controller for some reason pulled down
to about 3.5 volts due to a long cable, inherent capacitance..whatever...
This "high" was low enough to sometimes activate the direction pin as a
reverse direction. But since the 3.5V was in the "grey zone" of high and
low, it was a random thing. The solution, strangely enough, was to put a 1K
ohm resistor at the input to the controller. So the wire was going from my
CPU pin 2 through a 1K resistor to the controller. What this did was lower
the current sinking enough that the controller, though it had 3.5VDC on the
input side of the resistor, was a full 5VDC on the ouput side at the
controller. When the printer port pin actually went low, the input to the
resistor is 0VDC and the controller side dropped to 1.5V. This made
everything work well from there.
First time I've seen this and for some reason only on one pin, but the 1K
resistor solved the problem perfectly.
(Hope this helps...)
