EMC steps/rev calibration-SOLVED

Thanks to all for their input on this maddening problem. The problem
turned out to be the EMC (bug?) which allows some portion of EMC to
continue consuming resources after it has been shut down. Subsequent
instances of EMC then seem to hang/stall and the mouse tracks
intermittently. I atributed this behavior to the changes I'd been
making in INPUT_SCALE. I've since located a FAQ or two that detail
this behavior. Knowing about this behavior in advance would have
saved me 50 hours of debug time...grrrrr.
After 3 EMC reinstallations, and dozens of hard shutdowns due to a
hung system, all is now forgiven now that it's running fine :)
