There seems to be a piece of the puzzle missing. If this is steppermod, the
reason it crashes is that you are asking for more pulses than your pc is
capable of delivering during one task cycle. Since the pps rate is some kind
of multiple of axis scale and maximum velocity you might try reducing one
when you increase the other.
Output scale can be 1 when you are using steppermmod. It is not used. OTOH
if you are using freqmod it must be the same as input scale for that axis.
If you are using smdromod you set input scale to the number of pulses you
have to use to send the axis one unit distance and output scale to the number
of pulses you get back from the encoder.
