No need to be hesitant here. We all have sets of these codes that aren't
intiuitively obvious to newer members. BDI is short for Brain Dead Install
of the EMC. EMC is short for Enhanced Machine Controller. EMC is a project
started by NIST. (National Institute for Science and Technology -- a US,
Department of Commerce agency)
BDI is based on the open source Linux operating system but it is more than
Linux. It includes open source real-time extensions that makes it possible
to precicely time signals and processes. And it includes a full motion
controller the EMC that is for the most part public domain software. This
controller has been applied to lathes, mills, robots, flame tables, hexapods,
humvees, model aircraft, and Mars landers.
The BDI-2 series uses packages mostly from the Red Hat 6 Linux
idstribution. They are all hacked together by Paul Corner in England. The
BDI is complete in itself so that nothing needs to be added to begin with.
As you find other needs for the linux system, there are a lot of additional
packages available for download for this series.
BDI TNG runs with the Red Hat 7 series of Linux releases. This will provide
a lot more currentlinux compatable packages. The newer KDE and Gnome
desktops are much smoother operating and are more feature rich. The TNG also
uses a newer real time system that promises to be more stable than the ones
that have been used to date. This package requires quite a bit more computer
that the more stable version.
I'm a CD distributor for North America. I charge $10.00 for the BDI 2.16 CD.
and $30 for the two disk TNG distribution. That includes shipping and
handling.
You could get a download of the last net version, 2.16 from a site in
Finland. It is a large file 550m. That url is
http://www.yty.net/cnc/bdi.html
Thank you for your curiosity. It gave me the excuse to post this shameless
commercial plug.
